Drink Anything Your Heart Desires.

Today I was going to write about different flavors of vodkas there are out there considering a recent trip to the liquor store lately involved me and my friend witnessing a new flavor, cake vodka. It made me think, how interesting and at times, ridiculous, it is that some flavors, or alcoholic things, are created. The ideal behind it is obviously to broaden their product to peoples different likes and dislikes but some of the flavors for some reason leave this idea in my head as if they are going to aim towards the younger crowd, thinking these sweet flavors would entice them more, and those would be the consumers that would purchase their item more often. It did however work for a different product, which has been in the news many times and other types of drinks were following with the same ideal. Energy drinks mixed with alcohol, also known as Four Loko. However, today Four Loko’s are changed to remove the caffeine from the drink because so many young adults were drinking this in excess, blacking out and some even dying. The drink would contain a decent amount of alcohol to the point many people would be intoxicated after just drinking one of them. I’ve heard stories, read articles, and seen news reports of people blacking out after drinking one of them. What makes the matters worse with this drink, is the fact so many young people are the ones drinking this. There is a slim chance you’ll see an adult go to the store and pick up a four loko, then you would a 21 year old who could either be getting it for themselves or someone younger than them. When it comes to this situation, it is even more dangerous because most people at that age do not know the effects of alcohol, what it can do to them, and realize how dangerous that this drink especially is. Luckily, changes were made to the drink and since then, I haven’t heard many negative things still being said of them. I am sure it still is a drink that will definitely make you intoxicated but that mix of caffeine and alcohol is taken away, which takes away a big risk of negative effects from the drink. It seems the companies come up with new ideas to entice a younger generation to drinking. The idea of Four Lokos seems like one of them, and the newest edition is alcohol infused whipped cream. I have tried it before and was disgusted by it, but I know people that are younger and are in love with it. They take something so innocent like whipped cream, and take it to an extreme by infusing alcohol into it. It just seems like these products, and ones similar to it, are a bad idea. It seems like it could just be a way to make money and not truly realize what could happen after drinking these products, or who is getting their hands on it. I think I’ll just stick to beer.

  1. I'm so happy I'm not the only one grossed out by this whole alcoholic whipped cream movement! I feel like companies are making alcohol appeal to a younger and younger audience; it kind of reminds me how ecstasy can come in candy necklace form. Before we know it there will be vodka infused lollipops. Give me a Miller any day.

  2. I also think these products where people who are drinking them do not know there affects on their bodies. As an RA I have seen so many incidents with four loko. When there was talk of banning it on campus there was a mass influx of it. People had cases in their rooms. I think it has decreased recently when people found out it was 700 calories a drink.
